Discovering Agricultural Careers through 4-H Programs in Wabash County
October 24, 2024
When most people think of agriculture, their minds go straight to farming. But, the agriculture industry holds a world of opportunities beyond farming. Programs like 4-H Wabash County are giving kids of all ages a behind-the-scenes look at the vast and exciting possibilities the agricultural industry offers. Whether exploring new technology, engaging in hands-on STEM projects, or learning about animal science, 4-H is helping to plant the seeds for rewarding careers.
4-H: More Than Just Farming
The 4-H program in Wabash County, led by Youth Development Extension Educator Jessi Houston, is designed to open young minds to the various paths agriculture offers. From mini 4-H for kindergarteners to the more advanced program for grades 3-12, kids get a well-rounded exposure to everything from civic engagement to healthy living, sparking their curiosity about the exciting world of agriculture.
"We have the traditional 4-H meetings where we meet six times a year, as well as other township clubs," explained Houston. "'We also offer specialty clubs for students to engage in, including dog, shooting sports, veterinary science, robotics, goat, rabbit, poultry, and tractor maintenance, just to name a few."
Popular initiatives like Chef University—where cooking and science collide—show that agriculture isn't just about crops and livestock. It's about innovation, technology, and community impact. “We talk about where the food and recipes come from while cooking and give the students something new to try and show friends and family what they have learned.”
Educational Partnerships: Learning Beyond the Classroom
What makes the 4-H program, in conjunction with the Purdue Extension, stand out is its focus on partnerships with local schools, libraries, and after-school programs. Kids aren't just reading about agriculture—they're experiencing it.
Field days give students hands-on opportunities to explore everything from growing food to precision agriculture. Programs like Junior Master Gardeners let them see their efforts bear fruit (literally) as they learn how to grow, harvest, and even make salsa from their produce.
The Role of STEM in Shaping the Future of Agriculture
One of the standout aspects of the 4-H program is its emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Today, agriculture relies heavily on these fields, and students who participate in 4-H are getting a head start in understanding how technology can revolutionize farming and food production.
Through precision agriculture programs, high school students learn how to use drones, GPS technology, and data analytics to manage crops more efficiently. These skills aren't just valuable on the farm—they're setting the stage for agri-tech, engineering, and environmental sciences careers. By blending STEM with traditional agriculture, Purdue Extension ensures that the next generation of agricultural leaders will be ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow's world.
"We want high school graduates, at least 18 years old, to leave with the skills needed to jumpstart a career in the agricultural industry," said Geoff Schortgen, Agriculture & Natural Resource Educator at Purdue University Extension Wabash County. “Whether obtaining a Category 1 license to spray agricultural fields or a 3B license for lawn care, we're focused on equipping them with the certifications required to gain valuable, hands-on experience.”
Endless Career Possibilities in Agriculture
Think agriculture is just about becoming a farmer? Think again. The educators at Purdue Extension are passionate about showing kids that the agricultural field includes high-tech, well-paying careers. From roles in precision agriculture, where students can earn certifications and licenses, to horticulture and community garden management opportunities, there's an agricultural career for nearly every interest.
Exposure events, such as farmers' markets and community outreach, help students and the larger community see agriculture in a new light. Through 4-H, kids in Wabash County are not just learning—they're being prepared for a bright future in one of the world's most vital industries.
